It seems that first timer Simon didn't just break his left arm some weeks ago but also his right, according to mentor Colin! Get well soon old son.

NMBC has enrolled as a partner with the French sports equipment giants, Decathlon. They’ve just opened their first store in the north east at Team Valley Retail Park, Gateshead. It’s in the opposite corner to Halfords.

To get things underway they’ve given us a fantastic discount opportunity and issued me with vouchers worth 20% off their own-brand “Btwin” range of kit. I can certainly vouch for the quality of their waterproof jackets, gear cables, bikes and other bits ‘n bobs (coz I’ve bought them all at one time or another). They sell kit for all sports not just cycling, so you skiers, snowboarders, canoeists, runners and Triathlete types will find something of use at a great price on their shelves, all with a 2 year warranty.

The beauty of this initial deal is that if it is successful and leads to more we could possibly benefit from some sort of sponsorship from Decathlon which would be fantastic. These first vouchers are valid until 31st March and I’d urge you all to at least take a look at their stuff. Before you travel over there PLEASE collect a voucher or three from me first, (you can text/FB message or ring me to arrange) as it’s important that the store staff recognise you are a member of NMBC.

Superb outing at Ian Browning's Birthday Ride at Innerleithen in August.

Brilliant day with the Core at Grizedale on 26th June, see list.

Strangely low turnouts from Springtime onwrards - where is everyone?

Disaster strikes Ian Browning at our Glentress Gathering on 17th April - story elsewhere.

Very enjoyable outing at Thrunton on 31st January with Justin, Chris D, John, Paul D and David E. Danger, what danger?

Ice puts the brakes on in early January.

Not too many folk venturing out just after New Year with nasty ice interfering from mid-January. Let's hope it doesn't last too long.

Advert: Biker-friendly eatery - better placed for roadies but this might be handy for some of us:

Catch up with some of the stories from recent outings in the Highlands with Paul W, Billy, John R and Paul B on Facebook.

See some action from the Clennel Colossus where the Westerhope Branch and the Fatbiker's Friends got plenty of exercise, also on Facebook.

Below - the magnificent Forest of Ae.

Word is there could be a week in North Wales at the planning stage for some time this year. If you think you'd be interested please make yourself known on Facebook or the Forum and that will help us accommodate as many folk as we can to make it another memorable excursion for the Midaircrisis crew.

Our members are into everything BIKE!

Currently there are several Club members engaged fairly regularly in some sort of competitive MTB (and other, less likely) series of bike events.

Principal among these folk are our Girls Group leader Amelia T who is rapidly establishing her Downhill race credentials, and our very own Doctor Lucy B who seems fond of the odd Cyclo Cross meeting.

Meanwhile, of the lads, Alun M, Chris D, Jon B and a few others are on the Enduro/Endurance path several times a year with Jon also doing quite a bit of road stuff, CX and hill climbs, all three enjoying some impressive successes. Francis M and Justin D also dabble in a bit of Downhilling at times.

If you follow the Strava social GPS tracking system you'll find some huge mileages clocked up by several NMBC members, principally Jon, Mark A, Dan W and Lucy again though much of it not off-road. It does demonstrate, however, we have some great cycling athletes in the Club and their presence on our regular rides gives us all something to aim for, or at least be impressed by!

For the majority however, it's a case of our bread-and-butter weekend Cross-Country jaunts to exotic spots like the Borders, The Lakes, Northumberland National Park or North Yorkshire while the weather often dictates staying much closer to home, the favourites being Chopwell Wood, Hamsterley Forest, Thrunton Wood or Kielder. We also do the odd Summer Holiday trip to the Alps, Scotland or Wales and a few long weekends a bit closer.

Next Night Ride: Thursday as usual.

Thursday nighters are 10-25 milers, 7:00pm start at ASDA East car park, Benton, 3-3.5 hours and generally OK for fit new riders but you need decent lights you can see with, NOT CANDLES. You MUST wear a cycle helmet.

Sundays are generally much longer, 8:00am to 10:00am starts from ride venue ending around teatime, and much harder rides.

Other ad-hoc rides are always being organised, see our Facebook page. Gloves, waterproof coat, snack and drink recommended. Carry basic tools.

The bigger the group, the louder the laughs!
