Sunday 8th March 2015

First let me welcome newcomer Andy V to the Club. Andy has just moved up here from the Bristol area and came out with us today for his maiden voyage. He's an experienced mountain biker and rides a Marin Mount Vision.

We met, as usual for a Sunday outing, at Gosforth Park where amazingly only four of us - Chris D, Justin, Mark R and Terry - showed up on this perfect riding day, with Andy meeeting us down at Pinchinthorpe for our amble around Guisborough Woods.

The first thing we noticed was how dry the trails were, having retained just enough moisture to make them super-grippy and ripe for a good old blast. And apart from Terry's sluggish climbing which created a lovely blister on one heel (fool - should have stayed on the bike!), that's exactly what we got. Between them, Chris and Justin managed to pick out a good chunk of the best bits as its been a while since our last visit, and so good were the drops that even the Old Bof agreed to repeating several sections. Wow, the Gollum "sessioning" - what next, pink shorts?

You'll see what the overall plan was by looking at the Strava trace - in and out again - but there were at least four chunks of downhward sloping singletrack we found by perseverance that we'd never done before, and two in particular with some reasonably extreme gradients lurking to catch the unwary. Fortunately none of us succumberd, and the only injury of the day was sustained by Andy as he dutifully fulfilled the old Club rule of falling on your first ride. It was an off-camber edge followed by a nice tree root that caught him, luckily not on one of those evil descents, and the leg injury looked painful enough but he shrugged it off. The bike suffered no more than twisted handlebars so we weren't stopped for long.

Mark provided the entertainment on the run back to the cars with his Specialized Camber emitting painful cracking noises due to back end bearing wear, and we ended the day in the cafe for a cuppa and in Justin's case the biggest chunk of sickly cake we've ever seen.

A great little ride, and let's hope the trails stay in this condition for most of the year.
